GREENWOOD — Wayne E. Hakala, 70, of Greenwood passed away after a two-year battle with cancer on Thursday, March 26, 2015.

Wayne was born in Norway on Dec. 20, 1944, a son of Stanley E. Hakala and Katherine E. (Morey). He attended Greenwood City School, graduated from West Paris High School and earned a bachelor’s of science degree from Central Maine Community College.
 Wayne met his wife, Anita Pierce, at a dance at the Locke Mills Town Hall. They were married Dec. 4, 1965. Wayne joined the United States Air Force in 1965. He served a 12-month tour at Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base during the Vietnam War. He retired in August 1985 as a Master Sergeant in the Civil Engineering Division.
 For the past 39 years, Wayne has been a member of the American Legion Posts 150 in Mechanic Falls and then Post 68 in Locke Mills. He has served as Post Commander for eight years and Fifth District Commander of Oxford County. Wayne was also active as a past fire chief for the Town of Greenwood and past selectman and planning board member; as well as a member of Jefferson Lodge 100 in Bryant Pond.

He is survived by his wife Anita; his brothers Raymond of South Paris, Stephen of Norway and Timothy of Harrison; sisters Judith of New Hampshire and Karen Hutchisen of Norway; six nephews; five nieces; five great-nephews; six great-nieces plus uncles, aunts, cousins and many dear friends.

Services, starting with Masonic services, will be held Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall Post 68, Locke Mills.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Stephens Memorial Hospital Oncology Department for the Infusion Room, 181 Main Street, Norway, ME 04268.
