Thomas Warden Sr.

PORTLAND — Thomas S. Warden Sr. 81, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born in Portland on July 23, 1932 to the late Ethel Mae Murray and Ivan Schley Warden. He spent his younger years on Munjoy Hill and moved to South Portland as a teenager and attended South Portland Schools. At a young age, he ventured out to sea as a merchant seaman before serving in the U.S. Army from Feb. 1953 to Feb. 1955 in Japan. In 1956, he married Patricia Dixon and they raised three children Linda, Dianne and Thomas (Bo) Jr.

Tom’s love for the sea continued when he began work for the Portland Pilots and then with Moran Tugboats as a deck hand and then as chief engineer, retiring in 2000. Tom will be remembered for his kind and giving ways — always lending a hand when needed. He loved people and had a gift when it came to relationships with others.

Tom was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather Henry Brooks; his brother, Robert in 1975, his brother, Richard in 2008 and his sister, Eloise Willis in 2013.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, his children, Linda Brewster of Cumberland, Dianne Reynolds of Clearwater, Fla. and Thomas (Bo) Warden Jr. of Greenwood; his brother, Ivan of Raymond; and three sisters, Eleanor Saville of Phoenixville, Pa., Audrey Schofield of Caribou and Debbie DeRaps of Franklin; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Cressey Road United Methodist Church in Gorham with Rev. Linwood Arnold officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Spring burial will be in Blue Point Cemetery, Scarborough.
