Thomas McNulty

RAYMOND — Thomas M. McNulty, 58, of East Greenwich, R.I. and Raymond, died from a rare and aggressive form of prostate cancer on April 14, 2015 at the family home in Braintree, Mass.

Tom grew up in East Braintree, participating in Little League at Watson Park, hockey at Ridge Arena and Cub Scouts at Sacred Heart Church. Summers were spent on Thomas Pond and, later, Sebago Lake in Raymond. He was in the first class (1974) to graduate from the “new” Braintree High School. He attended Boston College, graduating with a BA degree in 1978.

His goal in life was to fly. In his early 20s, he took flying lessons at Norwood Airport, earning his private pilot’s license. After working as an agent at Midway Airlines, he joined the Army in 1984, attending Warrant Officer training and Flight School at Fort Rucker, Ala. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., as an Apache helicopter pilot, deploying to Saudi Arabia/Iraq in support of Operation Desert Storm, his first of four deployments.

After leaving active duty, Tom joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Devens, while working for Ransome Airlines and then TWA Express as an agent and station manager in Providence, Worcester and Manchester. He moved to Maine in 1995 to work at Electro Static Technology, owned by his brother, Jim. While in Maine, he joined the Army National Guard, in Bangor, making the transition from flying attack helicopters to medical evacuation in the Black Hawk. During his time there, he was deployed to Bosnia, and to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also taught religion at Cheverus High School in Maine for a brief, yet rewarding, time. In 2008, Tom transferred to the Rhode Island Army National Guard, where he worked as an instructor pilot and safety officer. In 2011, he deployed to Afghanistan in the Herat area, bordering Iran.

Along the way, Tom made many friends. He will be remembered by them and his family as a kind and caring person who was devoted to his dogs (Shady, Jazz and Olivia).

Members of the McNulty family will always be grateful to Tom’s Army family for their support during his illness.

Tom was the son of the late James and Dorothy “Robbie” McNulty of Braintree, Mass. He was the brother of James McNulty of Windham, Kathleen McNulty-Vaughan of Lenox, Mass., and Maureen McNulty and Patricia McNulty, both of Braintree, Mass.; uncle of sseven.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 55 Commercial Street, Weymouth, Mass. A reception luncheon will follow in the church hall.
