Thomas Murphy

WESTBROOK & BROWNFIELD — Thomas H. Murphy, 83, passed away on March 8, 2015. He was born on Nov. 29, 1931, and was raised in Middleton, Mass., the son of the late Martin and Ebba (Nelson) Murphy.

Thomas was a graduate of Holton High School in Danvers, Mass., and furthered his education at Lowell College. He became an Electrical/Mechanical Engineer. He resided in Brownfield for many years before moving to Westbrook. Mr. Murphy retired from Saunders Brothers in Westbrook. He also owned and operated T.H. Murphy Associates Inc., with his wife, Fran.

Tom had a unique ability of making people feel that they were the most important person in the room when in conversation. He could even get the quietest person in the room to engage with him. He was a loving, dedicated, supportive father to all of his children and hands-on devoted “Grand pa” to his grandchildren. He had a special place in his heart for each grandchild, and they knew their own special connection to him. Too many to name. He will surely be missed. He was known for story-telling, always leaving room for a good chuckle. Tom enjoyed painting/sketching as a hobby. He was always studying vast interests and was highly-intelligent, creative and quick witted.

Tom is survived by his wife, best friend and soul mate of 33 years, Fran Murphy; loving daughters, Sharon, Debra, Carie, Christine; sons, Jonathan and Michael; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a close and dear sister, Patricia Pierce; and several nieces and nephews.

Tom was predeceased by a daughter, Jody, and by siblings, Nat, Fran and Dick.

At Tom’s request, a gathering for family and friends will be held at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland, on Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074.
