Sylvia Eaton

BROWNFIELD — Sylvia Ann Eaton, 67, of Brownfield, passed quietly from this life on Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center, after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 3, 1947, at the Memorial Hospital in No. Conway, N.H., the daughter of Everett Blake and Marion Meserve. Sylvia lived all her life in the “Blake Neighborhood” in Brownfield, a place she dearly loved. She attended grammar school in Brownfield, and later graduated from Fryeburg Academy.

In 1970 she married the love of her life, Wirt Eaton. They built a home on land in the Blake Neighborhood, and proceeded to make it a gathering place for their many friends and family. Their home was often full of Boy Scouts from Wirt’s Scout troop, and Sylvia loved each and every young person who graced her home.

After high school, Sylvia worked at the shoe shop in Fryeburg, and later spent over 30 years working at the Fryeburg Health Care Center, where she made many lasting friendships.

When not at work she loved traveling, be it trips to Camp Perry, Ohio, shooting matches with her husband Wirt, wandering up the coast of Maine with her longtime companion Robert MacDonald, going to car shows with their truck “Grizzly,” to Florida with her good friends Lynn and Everett Smith, boat rides on Hancock Pond with her valued friend Herbert Payne, and visits to his large family.

Sylvia was known for her wonderful cooking. Holidays and birthdays at her home were the most special of occasions, with tables loaded with her home-cooked food. Those lucky enough to taste her lasagna and peanut butter fudge will never forget them.

Sylvia served on the Fryeburg Rescue and was a member of the Brownfield Historical Society. She enjoyed her flower gardens, and shopping trips with her mother.

She was a quiet person who loved her community. Above all, Sylvia was a people person. She maintained close friendships all her life with school friends, and formed new and valued friendships everywhere she went. “Sylvia is a sweet person,” is a refrain among those who knew her. “She will be missed,” is an understatement.

Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Marion Meserve and Everett Blake; her husband Wirt Eaton; and her longtime companion Robert MacDonald.

She leaves behind several cousins, many of whom grew up in the Blake Neighborhood with her, including Joanne Thurston of Fryeburg; nephew Joseph Emerson of Brownfield; sister-in-law Mabel Hidden of Brownfield; and valued friend Herbert Payne of Denmark.

Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Brownfield. A memorial graveside service will be announced at a later date.
