Stephen Abbott

SACO — Stephen “Rabbit” F. Abbott, 70, of Main Street, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018, at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born in Boston on Oct. 1, 1947, the son of Elliott Frost Abbott and Lyle Cunningham Abbott. Stephen attended local schools and graduated from St. Sebastian’s Country Day School in Needham, Mass. He then attended Bowdoin College, where he played men’s ice hockey. After Bowdoin, he worked as the director of admission for South Kent School in Connecticut, while teaching Latin and Art History and coaching hockey, soccer and lacrosse.

From 1976-984, Stephen was owner and director for Camp Waganaki in East Waterford. In the mid 1980s, he worked at St. Sebastian’s School as director of admissions, coached hockey and taught Latin. Moving to Maine in the early 1990s, he was employed at Paine Webber as an estate planner and insurance coordinator. Stephen returned to Connecticut in 1996, as the director of annual fund and alumnae affairs until 2008, at Canterbury School in New Milford, Conn., while also coaching girls’ soccer.

Stephen was an avid hockey player, who also enjoyed fishing, exercising and supporting his Boston teams. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and coaching boys hockey, girls’ soccer and boys’ lacrosse.

Survivors include three sons, Stephen F. Abbott Jr. of Ormond Beach, Fla., Michael R. Abbott of Medway, Mass. and Thomas C. Abbott of South Casco; two daughters, Madeleine A. Abbott and Samantha J. Abbott, both of Portland; a sister, Jane L. Abbott of Rochester, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the Wilde Memorial Chapel, Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
