READING, MASS. — Stanley E. Howe, 89, of Reading, Mass., formerly of Wakefield and Melrose, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at the Bear Hill Nursing Center.

Born in Melrose on Nov. 14, 1925, he was the son of the late Eugene S. and Ruth G. (Turpin) Howe.

Stan was raised in Melrose and was a graduate of Melrose High School, Class of 1943. He served in the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army during WWII. He later received his Associate’s degree from Northeastern University in Electronic Engineering in 1955. He had worked for many years and later retired from Alpha Industries in Woburn in 1990.

Stan was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of Wakefield. He enjoyed downhill skiing, biking, roller-skating, square dancing, playing tennis and photography. Stan was the quintessential “jack-of-all-trades.” He enjoyed spending time at the cottage in Harrison, Maine, where he and his family had been summer residents since 1965. He was a life member of the I.E.E.E, a member of the National Association of The Tenth Mountain Division, U.S. Army, and a member of the Historical Society of Wakefield and Harrison, Maine.

On July 5, 1947, Stan married Margaret G. Mack. They were married for 66 years, until Marge's passing in 2013. He was the loving father of Janice L. Nute of Westborough, Mass.; Susan J. Howe and husband Richard Pepin of Coplin Plantation, Maine; Judith E. Howe and husband Arthur Fry of Westminster, Colo. He was the devoted grandfather of Michael, David, Jeremy, Peter and Dorothy Nute. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Smith.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 11, in the First Baptist Church, 8 Lafayette St., Wakefield, Mass. All are welcome to attend the reception downstairs immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stan's memory to the First Baptist Church of Wakefield, or to the Audubon Society of Massachusetts.
