STANDISH — Shirley L. Jewell Berger Hale, of Standish, died Saturday, March 15, 2014 in the loving arms of her family at a Portland hospital.

Shirley was born in West Baldwin on May 31, 1928, a daughter of George W. and Elsie M. Lombard Jewell-Meserve. Shirley attended the Baldwin Elementary School, Jefferson High School in Detroit, Mich., and Porter High School in Kezar Falls, where she graduated with honors in 1946, as well as the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1949.

Shirley worked as a charge nurse on the surgical floor in Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Conn., an operating room supervisor at the Osteopathic Hospital in Portland, and school district nurse for five years at SAD 55. She also worked for Sarah Coventry and Act II Jewelry Companies, owned and operated Shirley’s Deli for six years in Westbrook, was a lab technician for Rite Aid Pharmacy for five years in Naples and was manager of Jones Museum Gift Shop for three years at Douglass Mountain. Shirley was a member of Sebago Center Community Church.

She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, William A. Berger; and her second husband, William R. Hale; a granddaughter; a nephew; and stepdaughter, Anita Lord.

Survivors include her daughters, Karen A. Howland, Billie A. Roy and Regina I. Schlehuber; stepson, Roy Hale; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 20 at 11 a.m. at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. Private burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland. Online condolences may be sent to www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
