Ruth V. LaFountaine

NAPLES — Ruth V. LaFountaine, 89, of Naples passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 surrounded by her loving daughter and son-in-law with whom she resided.

Ruth was born on June 14, 1921 at the Dillingham Homestead at Songo Locks in Naples. She was the daughter of Willis and May Purington Dillingham, and graduated from Casco High School in 1941. Ruth walked four miles roundtrip every day, to and from the school bus. The only time that she was absent from school was when she fractured her shoulder and had to stay home to recover. Even though Ruth was only three years old when her mother passed away, she instinctively possessed exceptional motherly qualities and was an extremely devoted wife and mother.

She worked many years at Ellis Paperboard at Thompson’s Point in Portland, retiring from there in 1985.

Ruth enjoyed listening to the Gaither Vocal Band, and she and her daughter saw them perform live twice in Portland, and she had the opportunity to shake hands with Bill Gaither at one of those performances. She also enjoyed watching birds, especially hummingbirds and cardinals, and spending time with her friends at the Casco/Naples Senior meal site, as well as going out to lunch with her friends. She looked forward to attending Casco Days each year.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Wilfred “Peanut” LaFountaine; three sisters; and two brothers. Her sister, Dolly, was also her best friend.

Surviving is her loving and devoted daughter, Linda E. Flanigan of Naples; and a niece, Nancy Pond of Naples.

Visiting hours will be Friday, Dec. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge, Casco, where a funeral will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Naples Rescue Unit, 1100 Roosevelt Trail, Naples, ME 04055, attention: Chris Burnham, or to the American Heart Association, 51 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.
