Robert E. Southard

NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. — Robert E. Southard, 69, of New Windsor, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 2, 2010, at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh Campus.

Robert was born on Jan. 24, 1941, in Freeport. He was retired from the Army serving from 1958-1979. He served two tours of duty in the Korean War, as well as two tours of combat duty in the Vietnam Conflict, in which he was awarded numerous medals for his service, including the Bronze Star. Along with his 21 years of active Army service, he also accumulated 21 years of Civil Service with the Army.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Jan Piatt-Southard of New Windsor, N.Y.; his daughters, Yvonne Southard of Lisbon, Ute (Sissy) Lestage of Westbrook and Rose Sosa of Staten Island, N.Y.; his son, Robert Southard Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his four grandchildren; and his sister, Marjorie Anderson of Fryeburg.

A memorial service was held for family and friends on Monday, Dec. 6, at the Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home, Inc. in Newburgh, N.Y.
