Richard T. Anderson

PORTLAND — Richard T. Anderson, 86, of Portland, died on June 17, 2012, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born in South Portland on March 25, 1926, the son of the late Robert and Edna Mae (Warren) Anderson. Richard attended Portland schools and at age 16 worked building Liberty ships in South Portland.

At 18 years old, Richard entered the U.S. Army, serving in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He served in the 402nd Combat Engineers attached to the second core. Richard later served in the 88th Division Artillery. He is a lifetime member of VFW 6859.

Richard worked for 43 years as head maintenance machinist for Southworth Machine Company. His interests included fishing, hunting, repairing lawn mowers, snow blowers, and any machines.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Anderson of Portland; his children, Richard Anderson of Westbrook, Robert Anderson of Naples, James Anderson of Bangor, Charles Anderson of South Windham, Dorothy Smith of Naples, Mary Anderson of Naples, Lora Carr of Largo, Fla., Julie Anderson of Portland and Kristen Witham of Portland; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas; and his sister, Arlene Kierstead.

Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
