Richard C. Fisher

LOVELL — Richard Clayton Fisher of Lovell, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at the Norway Rehabilitation & Living Center in Norway, Maine, where he resided for the last five years.

Richard was born on Dec. 19, 1918, in North Abington, Mass., the son of William C. Fisher and Grace L. "Stoddard" Fisher. He attended Abington High School and later graduated from Quincy Trade School as an Electrician. He worked for over 40 years as a master electrician and machinist for M.B. Claff & Sons Co. of Brockton, Mass.

As a member of the 44th Field Artillery Battalion, Richard was among the first wave that landed on Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. He was in several European campaigns, including Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. As an expert in wiring and field communications, Richard and his crew were often sent ahead to establish communications for the advancing armies. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.

Richard and his wife, Arlene, moved permanently to Lovell in the early 1990s, after spending over 70 years in the Kezar Lake area. He was a member of the local V.F.W., Volunteer Fire Department, Historical Society, and United Church of Christ in Lovell. Richard enjoyed music, tinkering with clocks, cooking at bean suppers, gardening, and puttering in his workshop. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always had a simple pun or joke for friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda J. Fisher-Neenan and her husband Peter A. Neenan of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Lovell; and a few nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for Richard will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Lovell United Church of Christ in Center Lovell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department, 880 Hatch Road, Lovell, ME 04051, or to the Lovell Veterans of Foreign Wars, Smarts Hill Road, Lovell, ME 04051.
