He started working at Cedric Moore Garage in Portland as an automobile mechanic at age 18, where he met his wife, Judith Pratt. In the evening he worked part-time for The Portland News Company as a mechanic.

Raymond enjoyed fishing and camping in Jackman and Mt. Blue with his family over the years. He also enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Raymond Pond barbecuing with family and friends. Ray and Judy spent a lot of time on their boat the Judy-Ray on Sebago Lake. Raymond loved to putter in his large vegetable garden and tinker on cars. He was called “Mr. Fix-it” by his family because he could fix anything. He is a member of the Odd Fellows Chapter of Portland.
