Raider wrestlers on a roll headed into State Meet

WELLS — Teams look to be performing at their very best as the important championship season arrives.

Fryeburg Academy wrestlers appear to be “on a roll” as 12 Raiders will take to the mats this Saturday at the Class B state championships at the Augusta Civic Center.

Fryeburg won their first Regional title since 1986 last Saturday at Wells as the Raiders edged the host Warriors, 176.5 to 153 in the nine-school field. York was third with 114.5 points.

Senior Connor Sheehan made a triumphant return by winning the 113-pound division, coming back from a broken ankle suffered in the preseason. He won by a 15-0 decision over Oak Hill’s Carter LaBrecque.

Zach Sheehan also claimed a title, winning the 120-pound class with a pin of Jake Thornton of Mountain Valley in 3:30.

Ian MacFawn captured the 182-pound crown with a quick pin of York’s Mark Slusher in 39 seconds.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class move on to the Class B State Meet. Other Raiders punching a ticket to the big meet include:

Angel Escalante, 220; Andrew Lyman, 285, pin of Austin Talgo of Morse at 32 seconds; Hunter Day, 138, who lost a 17-2 decision to Gardiner’s Danny DeGallo; Jake Thurston, 152, who loss a 5-3 overtime decision to Michael Alvarez of Morse; Trevor Henschel, 195, who returned from injury and nearly reached the top but losing a tough 6-5 decision to Zach Handley of York;

Conor Smith, 126, winner by pin at 2:21 over Cody Maranius of Morse; Christian Miranda, 170, who lost by pin at 4:46 to Jacob Truman of Gardiner; CJ Bartlett, 160, winner by pin at 1:37 over Andrew Bryant of Lincoln Academy; and Matthew Boucher, 145, a winner by pin at 2:14 over Chad Bonti of Morse.
