Phyllis Hawkes

RAYMOND — Phyllis W. Hawkes, 88, died on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, after a short illness at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

She was the daughter of Andrew Foss and Mary Grant Arsenault Foss Howland. She married Clifford P. Hawkes Jr. in 1946. They lived in Portland until 1968, when they moved into their dream house at Bayview Estates in Raymond. After her husband died in 1995, Phyllis moved to the Hillcrest community in Scarborough.

An avid volunteer, she ran Bluebirds at West School in Portland as “Nana,” tested ears and eyes at the Raymond elementary school, and served as ballot clerk in Raymond.

Phyllis was a loving and devoted wife, mother of three children, grandmother to five grandchildren, great-grandmother to 14, and aunt to many.

She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Conley of Portland; her son, Robert Hawkes of Shapleigh; her daughter, Debra Hawkes of Old Orchard; and son Peter Hawkes of Beaumont, Calif.

In addition to her mother, father and husband, Phyllis was predeceased by her brother, Edwin Arsenault; sister, Freida Richardson; and a great-grandson.

At her request, Phyllis will not have a service. A graveside ceremony at the time of her interment this spring will honor her life and celebrate the memories of those she touched.

Arrangements are by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. To express condolences and participate in Phyllis’ online tribute, visit www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
