Philip R. Korhonen

BRYANT POND — Philip Roy Korhonen, 73, of Bryant Pond, died at his residence on Friday, July 22, 2011.

He was born on July 11, 1938, in New Sharon, the son of John and Freda Moody Korhonen, and was educated in local schools. Phil joined the U.S. Navy in 1957 and served on the USS Caloosahatchee until his discharge in 1961. He married Juanita Bernier on June 25, 1962.

Phil had worked at many places: the Maine Department of Transportation as a mechanic; owned his own excavation business for 20 years; owned and operated a skidder and farm raising beef, vegetables and apples; worked at the Maine Veterans’ Home; worked as a bus driver for MSAD 44; a mechanic and bus driver for SAD 17; and most recently worked for Korhonen Landscaping Co.

He was instrumental in building the Pleasant Valley Bible Church in 1980.

Phil took his family on many camping and fishing trips and had gone to California, Florida and Indiana. He had been a Boy Scout leader, was involved with 4-H, was on the school board for SAD 44 and had been road commissioner for the Town of Newry.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Juanita Bernier Korhonen of Bryant Pond; sons, David and of Waterford, Alan of Lakeland, Fla., Dale of Littleton, Scott of Franklin, Vt. and Bruce of Bryant Pond; two brothers, Robert “Bob” Korhonen of Elkhart, Ind. and Leslie Robertson of Newry; four sisters, Janet Tibbetts of Florida, Norma Bessey of Michigan, Winona Barker of Rumford and Betty Payne of Florida; and five grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held at the Bethel Church of Nazarene, Church Street, Bethel, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, at the future home of the Bethel Church of Nazarene, Route 26 (Walkers Mills Road), across from Hancock Lumber, with Pastor Chuck Mason and Gerry Shimamura officiants.
