EUSTIS — Donald Owen Coté Sr., 66, of Eustis, died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 2, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Scarborough on April 25, 1943, a son of Ernest and Helen (McCormick) Coté. On Aug. 23, 1960, he married Yvonne Pomerleau and for more than 30 years they made their home in Eustis. He was self-employed as a carpenter and owned and operated Don Coté Guide Service.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Yvonne, of Eustis; his children, Donald Jr. of Stratton, Tina Ryan of Stratton, Yvonne “Babes” of Strong, Gregory Coté of New Gloucester, Kelly Coté of Farmington, and Kevin Coté of Eustis; a special granddaughter; two sisters, Mary Stegar of Raymond and Florence of Florida; a brother, Victor of Scarborough; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly Ann; son, Robert; two grandsons; a granddaughter; and brothers, Ernest, Clifford, Stanley, and Albert.
A public memorial service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at St. John’s Church in Stratton. Interment followed at the New Flagstaff Cemetery. Julie Marie Palmer, 44, of Derry, N.H., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 at Parkland Medical Center in Derry. She was born in Bridgton, Me. on Aug. 20, 1965, a daughter of Manlea Wyman Thompson and Clara Doreen Rolfe Thompson.
Julie, a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and aunt, enjoyed life and spending time with her family. Julie considered The Dirty 3rds the best cover band in New England and enjoyed listening to their music.
Survivors include her husband, Donald J. Palmer; one daughter, Danielle R. Morren; one son, Jacob R. Palmer; her father, Manlea Wyman Thompson; stepmother, Penny C. Eugene E. McAllister SOUTH PARIS — Eugene E. McAllister, 73, of North Waterford died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at Market Square Health Care Center.
He was born in North Waterford on Feb. 12, 1936, the son of Winfield and Edith Crouse McAllister. He attended Gould Academy and had been employed by H. E. Haines in Winn as a truck driver and equipment operator. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and in his early days, snowmobiling. He served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married Margaret Allen on June 29, 1957.
He is survived by his wife of North Waterford; a daughter, Lisa Scribner of North Waterford; a son, Dale McAllister of Sanford; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Lawrence of North Waterford.
He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Irving and Erlon; and a sister, Celia Littlefield.

CUMBERLAND CENTER — Diane L. Allen, 61, of Cumberland Center, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday evening, Dec. 6, 2009, following a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer lasting nearly four years.
She was raised in North Windham, the daughter of Stephen and Ruth Manchester. She graduated from Westbrook Junior College and subsequently from Casco Bay College. She was initially employed with the law firm Preti & Flaherty of Portland where she met her husband Richard. She had a heart for charity and volunteered her time assisting the elderly with the organization Just Friends of Yarmouth. Her greatest joy was serving her family, friends and the Lord.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Richard Allen; her son Michael Allen of Standish; her daughter Melissa Abeln of Gorham; her five precious grandchildren; her mother Ruth Manchester of North Windham; brother Stephen of Limerick; sister Marian Walton of Fayette; brother Warren Manchester of Raymond; and sister Susan Wheeler of Winthrop.
A Christian celebration of Diane's life will be shared with friends and family at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 13, at the Vineyard Christian Church, Route 302 Westbrook; preceded by a private burial service with immediate family.
Nancy L. Avery Nancy Lee (Poirier) Avery, 68, of Bridgton and Ellenton, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009 after a six-year battle with cancer.
Nancy was born in 1941 in Skowhegan, to Wallace Samuel and Myrtle Hastings Poirier. She graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1959, where she participated in basketball and was a member of the marching drill team. She was married to Douglas R. Avery for 42 years until his death in 2006. She had three children, Nicole, John and Andy and three grandchildren. She was also a very important “mother figure” to many other people throughout her lifetime. Her friends and family commented many times on how many times Nancy had helped them through a difficult decision or been there to celebrate something special in their life. And, she could always be counted on to send a birthday card on time! She had a ringing, infectious laugh that could be heard throughout the house. She loved Christmas and had a beautiful collection of Santa Clauses. Over the past month, she has passed on this collection to many of her special friends and family members who have supported her through the years. Doug and Nancy moved to Bridgton in 1969. For five years, she was a dorm parent for Holt Hall at Bridgton Academy. Nancy was a dedicated and valued employee for many years for the practice of Theron Hatch, DDS and for Maine Street Graphics. She was very active in the Lake Region High School Booster Club, serving as president for several years. She was also very involved in the theatre program. In 1999, she and Doug retired and bought a home in Ellenton, Fla., where they were active in their community and local golf leagues. Despite the fact that she didn’t take up golf until she was 58, she was an accomplished and avid golfer, scoring a hole-in-one in 2007 at her home course, Bridgton Highlands. She was active in the Women’s Golf league, and in 2005, she chaired the Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament, raising money for cancer research.
She was predeceased by her parents; her sister May; and brothers John and Wally (Sonny).
Nancy is survived by her daughter Nicole Avery of Portland; son John Avery of Rochester, N.Y.; son Andrew Avery of Kennebunk; three grandchildren; sister June Labun of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a niece and many friends.

BROWNFIELD — Elwood K. Apt, 73, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died peacefully at his home on Dec. 7, 2009 after a long illness with cancer.
He was born Feb. 9, 1937 in Castine, to Chester and Harriet (Grindle) Apt. He and his wife, Adolia, of 54 years, lived most of his life in Salisbury, Mass. and was employed by Amesbury Specialty and retired from Governor Dummer Academy. After his retirement, they moved to Brownfield in 1987.
He was predeceased by his brother Frederick Apt.

SWEDEN — Frances V. Flint, 69, of Sweden, died in Lewiston on Dec. 6, 2009.
She was born in Queens, N.Y. on April 28, 1940, the daughter of Henry and Cecilia (Schaffler) Paeper. Francis had worked at several jobs including A.H. Benoit, Pumpkin Valley Inn, Bridgton Food Store, SAD 72 and volunteered with Western Maine Transportation. While in Europe with her husband, she worked with handicapped children. She was retired from the Army Reserve, having received four achievement awards and had most recently been town treasurer and tax collector for the Town of Sweden for over 20 years.
She is survived by a son, Dana H. Nason Jr. of Sweden; a daughter, Deantha M. Warner of Bridgton; a brother, Henry Paeper of New York; two sisters, Cecilia Hoffman of New York and Catherine Paeper of Leominster, Mass.; and two grandchildren, both of Sweden.
Memorial services will be held at the Sweden Town Hall on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Richard Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Flint Cemetery, Sweden, with a potluck supper to follow at the town hall.

Rev. Gilbert A. Patenaude AUGUSTA — Rev. Gilbert A. Patenaude, 89, of Oxford Street, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 a few hours short of his 90th birthday.
Father Pat, as he was affectionately referred to by former parishioners and friends, was born in Augusta on Dec. 3, 1919, the son of the late Wilfred and Lucie (Gilbert) Patenaude. At the time of his death, he held the distinction of being the oldest living priest in the Diocese of Portland. He was a graduate of St. Augustine School in Augusta, St. Charles Borromee College in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and did his theological studies at St. Augustine Seminary in Toronto, Ontario. He was ordained to the priesthood in Portland on June 15, 1946. His first parish assignment following ordination was as an assistant at Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Skowhegan. In 1947, he was assigned as an assistant at St. Hyacinth Parish in Westbrook where he served until 1951, when he was reassigned as an assistant at St. Louis Parish in Auburn. In 1961, he was appointed Pastor of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Oquossoc, which included churches in Rangeley and Stratton. While ministering at those churches, he was very instrumental in building the interfaith Richard Bell Memorial Chapel at Sugarloaf, and offering seasonal on-mountain weekend masses for skiers. In March of 1968, he was assigned as pastor at St. Catherine Parish in Norway with Bridgton as a mission church. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of St. Joseph Church in Bridgton. In 1973, he was appointed founding pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Bridgton which included a mission church in Fryeburg. From September of 1974 until June of 1979, he returned to Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish where he served as Pastor and oversaw an extensive renovation of that church. In June of 1979, he became Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Winthrop and served that Parish until his retirement in 1989. While there, he founded the Winthrop Council of the Knights of Columbus, and oversaw the construction and programming for the Parish Religious Education Center. In addition to his parish assignments, he was the Maine Army National Guard Chaplain from 1949 until 1956. Subsequently, he served as an Army Reserve Chaplain, where in 1972, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served as the State Chaplain for the American Legion from 1962 to 1963 and, for many years, he was the chaplain for Abnaki Council Knights of Columbus. In his retirement, he also ministered at the Togus V.A. Hospital. He was a lifetime member of Le Club Calumet and served as Chaplain for the club for over 10 years. In addition, Le Club Calumet honored him with La Médaille d'Honneur in 2005 for extraordinary accomplishments. He possessed inordinate strength both physically and emotionally and he always put forth his best effort. He loved gardening and for many years his weedless gardens were remarkable for their perfectly straight rows and abundant produce, most of which he donated. He was a Registered Maine Guide for over 40 years. He was an avid sportsman, the subject of numerous published articles. He enjoyed woodworking and built Canadian gliders for many friends and relatives.
He is survived by two brothers, Irenee Patenaude and Dr. Raymond Patenaude; three sisters, Cecile Morin, Therese Rodrigue and Julia Fontaine; 23 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; one sister, Sister Florence Patenaude; and three brothers, Rev. Gerard Patenaude, Rev. Laurent Patenaude, and Dr. Robert Patenaude.
Visiting hours were held on Monday, Dec. 7, at St. Augustine Catholic Church on Northern Avenue in Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated following the visitation at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial and committal prayers followed in Holy Family Cemetery on Townsend Road in Augusta. RAYMOND — Loren C. Lovelette, 81, of Raymond, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Richford, Vt., on Feb. 15, 1928, the son of Merritt B. and Mildred L. (Domina) Lovelette. During World War II, Loren served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was employed as foreman for Philips-Norelco for 37 years, retiring in 1989. After retiring, he moved to Maine and worked for Standard Electric as a delivery driver. Most recently, he worked as a construction flagger for Suburban Security until the time of his death. Loren liked to read, fish and putter around his house doing yard work.
Loren is survived by his wife of 25 years, Velma of Raymond; a son, Greg Lovelette; two daughters, Lisa Lovelette and Georgina Johnson, all of Vermont; two stepsons, Steven Guerrette of LaPorte, Ind. and Todd Guerrette of Raymond; two stepdaughters, Pam Gauvin of Bar Mills and Tina Bell of Raymond; two brothers, Allen of Herman and Lawrence of St. Albans, Vt.; two sisters, Janice Gale of Burlington, Vt. and Sally Ovitt of Florida; and several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Steven W. Brower LEWISTON — Steven W. Brower, 64, of Gray died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 at Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Quincy, Ill. on Nov. 25, 1945, the son of Willard J. and Louise M. Schutte Brower. He attended St. Peter’s Parochial School and graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Quincy, Ill. He attended one year at Lewis College in Romeoville, Ill. for airplane maintenance, two years at DeVry University for electrical engineering and a two-year computer degree from John Wood Community College in Chicago, Ill. He worked for Motorola, he was a broadcast antenna engineer for Harris and Andrew Corp., both in Quincy, Ill. After moving to Maine, he was employed at Dielectric in Raymond. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the United Commercial Travelers. He was active in the St. Peter’s Church Scout Troop, and was present when his sons Tom, Jim and Bill all received their Eagle badges. He served our country in the U.S. Army. He married Mary Gillespie on Aug. 2, 1969.
He is survived by his wife of Gray; seven children, William Joseph Brower of Northfield, Ill., James Edward Brower and Thomas Anthony Brower, both of Crest Hill, Ill., David Patrick Brower of Gray, Kathleen Rose Browning of Naperville, Ill., Susan Marie Brower (U.S. Navy) of Goose Creek, S.C. and John Paul Brower of Gray; three grandchildren; two sisters, Judith Guerinni of Dalzall, Ill. and Mary Beth Craft of Quincy, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

PITTSFIELD — Jeffrey W. Guilford, 56, of Palmyra died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Jeff was born in Lewiston, Nov. 15, 1953, the son of the late Donald F. Guilford Sr. and Louise V. Wentworth Guilford. He was one of eight children brought up in the Norway area and lived in Palmyra since July 2001. He married Susanne Watrous Spencer on July 9, 2005. He was educated in the Norway schools graduating from Oxford Hills High School, where he played sports. Growing up as a kid, he could name every player in the majors and give you their stats. When it came to baseball, he had a photographic memory. He was involved in the fantasy football, basketball and baseball leagues. He loved the Red Sox, Celtics, and the Patriots. He never missed a game. He lived his dreams of playing sports by coaching AAU teams in the area and doing some sports announcing at local games. He was employed by Verso Paper in Jay. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially Megan, Matt, and his grandchildren. He loved playing golf and spent most of the summer months playing in tournaments around the state with three of his brothers. He was always the life of the party making everyone laugh. His goal was to get a smile out of all those who he came in contact with. He always made sure that before he would do anything fun, the house was cleaned, the laundry done, and a meal was cooked or at least planned.
He is survived by his wife, Susanne of Palmyra; his son, Toby Guilford of Woodstock; his daughter, Tara Smith of South Paris; his stepdaughter, Megan Spencer of Palmyra; his stepson, Matthew Spencer of Palmyra; two grandchildren; his siblings, Tom Guilford of Harrison, Darlene Berry of Canton, Ritchie Guilford of Canaan, David Guilford of Woodstock, Ga. and Michael Guilford of Standish; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Donald (Peanut) F. Guilford Jr.; and his sister, Pamela Norton.

WESTBROOK — Marie Carmela (Russo) Smith died peacefully on Dec. 7, 2009, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a very long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born in London, England on July 14, 1939, the daughter of Raffale Russo and Felicetta (Romano) Russo. Marie attended public schools and Pittmans Secretarial College in London. As a child during the war years, Marie was evacuated to a convent outside of London. She met her husband while he was in the Air Force stationed in London, England. A year later on June 21, 1959, they were married and came to America to start their lives together. This past summer, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Marie was a longtime employee of the telephone company, retiring in 1997. After retiring, she and her husband spent winters in Naples, Fla. and summers in Maine. In July of 2004, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She faced her illness with courage, dignity and grace. Even as the end was approaching, she brought laughter to her family, friends, doctors and nurses, a trait admired by all. Marie had an amazing zest for life and an untouchable uniqueness to her. Whoever came in contact with her, from the very young to the very old, would leave with laughter and a story dear to their heart. Her friends were plentiful. Her legacies are too numerous to mention.
She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother James.
She is survived by her husband Ralph; her three children, Gary Paul Smith of Portland, Michael Alan Smith of Raymond and Lisa Karen Smith of Westbrook; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; her twin sister Rita; her sister Anne; her brother Paul; and several nieces and nephews.

WINDHAM — Perley D. Jordan, Jr., 85, of Windham died Saturday Dec. 5, 2009 at a local health care facility.
Born in Windham, he was a son of Perley D. Jordan, Sr. and Phyllis Lombard Jordan. He was a 1941 graduate of Windham High School. Perley began his career with the Army Corps of Engineers and worked at Dow AFB in Bangor, Loring AFB in Limestone and several other Air Force bases in New England. In 1957, he began work with the Railway Mail. Between this and the U.S. Postal Service, he worked for 26 years retiring in 1983. During World War II, he served in the Army and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. In retirement, he assisted his son and daughter-in-law in their Sebago Gardens business. Perley was a member of the Smith-Wagner American Legion, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. He enjoyed sports, cards and horse racing.
Surviving him are his wife of 59 years, Bernadene Davis Jordan of Windham; his son, Rodney D. Jordan of Naples; his daughter, Victoria L. Kurkowski of Livonia, Mich.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

HIRAM — Rayfield A. Payne, 73, of Hiram, passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 2, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Eliot, Maine on Dec. 25, 1935, one of 11 children to Francis and Relefa McIntire Payne. His family moved from Kittery to Denmark in 1945, where he attended Denmark Elementary School. Ray graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1955, where he was an extremely gifted athlete. One of his many athletic achievements was winning the state championship as an individual runner all four years of high school. He helped his cross-country team win the state championship three out of those four years. Ray met the love of his life, Ruth Wadsworth, at Fryeburg Academy during his senior year, and they were married on June 15, 1957. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for the next two years, traveling through much of Europe and the Mediterranean. Ray was instilled with a solid work ethic, from his childhood well into his later years. He devoted 43 years to his chosen career of operating and maintaining several hydroelectric power plants throughout the state, retiring at the age of 67. He and Ruth shared a passion for working the land at their beloved Old Homestead Farm, raising and showing Polled Hereford cattle with great success at agricultural fairs throughout New England. Ray was proud to have been an active member of the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge in Brownfield. He was a natural born leader, and a man whose kindness and generosity touched many lives. An avid sportsman, Ray cherished his time hunting and fishing in the great outdoors.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Carroll, and a sister, Gwendolyn.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ruth Payne; two daughters, Sherry George and Christine Payne; a son, Peter; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours. A memorial Masonic service was held at the Hiram Village Cemetery on Sunday, Dec. 6. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to: Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 U.S. Route 1, Suite 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.
