WESTBROOK — Barbara (Congdon) Littlefield, 93, died May 2, 2009, in Westbrook.
Mrs. Littlefield was born in Portland, Jan. 11, 1916, the daughter of Gilbert and Helen (Milliken) Congdon. She was educated in Portland schools and was a graduate of St. Mary’s at Burlington, N.J. Mrs. Littlefield studied voice with the late Grace Farrington Homested of Portland and in New York City. She was a soloist at Congress Square Universalist Church, Messiah-All Souls Church, Woodfords Congregational Church, and member of the Radio Parish Quartet on WCSH radio. She was a member of Portland Rossini Club, Dr. Brinkler’s Polyphonic Society, Portland Lyric Theatre, and Altrusa Club of Portland. She served as treasurer of Congdon Transportation and secretary of Deering Junction Warehouse.
Mrs. Littlefield was predeceased by her husband, Frederick H. Littlefield Sr.; her sister, Virginia Congdon, and her brother, F. Gilbert Congdon Jr.
She is survived by her stepsons, Sherry H. Littlefield of Raymond and Frederick H. Littlefield Jr. of Barrington, N.H.; a nephew, three nieces, Patricia C. Coombs, great-nieces and numerous great-nephews as well as step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Interment followed at Pine Grove Cemetery, Falmouth. RUMFORD — Eleanor May O’Leary Patrie, 84, died Saturday, May 2, 2009 on her birthday at the Rumford Hospital after a brief illness.
She was a long-time guest of the Rumford Community Home, where she could be found reading in the lobby, playing bingo, participating in sing-a-longs and working with the priest at Mass. World War II found her building ships in Florida and South Portland for the war effort. She later retired from the paper mill in Rumford. She was a wonderful step-grandmother to her seven grandchildren and her 35 nieces and nephews, who will cherish her memory forever.
Survivors include stepsons, Barry A. Patrie of North Waterford and David M. Patrie of Syracuse, N.Y.; seven step-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou O’Leary Doyle of Dunwoody, Ga.
The second of nine children, she was predeceased by her husband, Alphonse J. Patrie II.; her parents, Daniel and Lucille O’Leary; five brothers, Donald, Gordon, Ivus, John and Gerald; and two sisters, Dorothy A. Hosie and Geraldine Lambert.
Visiting hours will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at S.G. Thibault Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Parish of the Holy Savior Church, 126 Maine Avenue, Rumford. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery.

CAPE ELIZABETH — Patricia Capano, 80, of Cape Elizabeth, died May 4, 2009, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
She was born in Portland on Jan. 14, 1929, the oldest of four daughters of Lorne and Priscilla LaRochelle. Patricia graduated from South Portland High School, Westbrook Junior College, and Farmington State Teachers College. Patricia taught school in Skowhegan and Portland before marrying her college sweetheart, Edmund Capano, on Sept. 27, 1952. Following her marriage, Patricia continued to teach in the elementary school system in Cape Elizabeth for 25 years. She was a delegate to the N.E.A. Conference in Portland, Oregon, and again in Atlantic City, N.J. Patricia enjoyed antiquing and gardening, and was a former member of the Tall Oaks Garden Club. She was an avid fan of her three children’s athletic events, as well as the Boston Red Sox. Patricia enjoyed the family’s vacation log cabin in the woods of New Hampshire, and following the death of her husband, spent the winters in Daytona Beach, Fla. For many years, Patricia volunteered for the Bruce Roberts Children’s Fund. She also served as a trustee for the historic Spurwink Congregational Church in Cape Elizabeth, where she would open the church for weddings, funerals, and special events.
Patricia was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Edmund; and a sister, Constance Rendell.
She is survived by her three children, Deborah Murphy of Sebago, and sons Mark Capano of New Gloucester, and Peter Capano of Manchester, N.H.; her four grandchildren; her sisters, Nancy (Walter) Wynne of South Portland, and Suzanne Palmer of Westport, Mass.; and nine nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to a period of memorial visitation from 12 to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, to be followed by a 2 p.m. graveside service at Riverside Cemetery, Spurwink Road and Route 77, Cape Elizabeth. PORTLAND — Joan Mills Hare, 77, of Fresno, Calif., and longtime resident of Southern Maine and San Diego, Calif., died on Feb. 28, 2009.
She was born in Houlton, Dec. 23, 1931, the daughter of Linton and Marguerite Mills. She graduated from Ricker Classical Institute and received her BS in Education from Gorham State Teachers College. She taught in the Standish school system, worked at the University of Southern Maine, and recently retired from the Veteran’s Administration in San Diego, Calif.
She is survived by three sons, Michael Hare and David R. Hare of Fresno, Calif., and James L. Hare of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; one sister, Kathryn Browne of Marco Island, Fla.; three grandchildren, including Lucas Hare of Raymond; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Hare and Andrew Hare of Raymond. Funeral services were conducted in Fresno on March 3. A committal service will be held later this year at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
SEBAGO — Norman H. Cummings, 79, passed away on May 2, 2009, at his home on Douglas Hill in Sebago.
He was born in Maxfield, Feb. 3, 1930, to Harold V. and Florence Sawyer Cummings. He graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, Ricker Classical in Houlton, and received a BS degree in Agronomy from the University of Maine at Orono in 1951. While at UMO, he played football, he was a Sophomore Owl, and president of the Intramural Athletic Association. He was a House Officer at Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He married Louise Snow on Nov. 25, 1951. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their home in Sebago in 2001. He was an Army Veteran serving in the 351st M.A.S.H. unit in Germany. After college, Mr. Cummings began a 41-year career with Eastern States Farmers Exchange and Agway Inc. He worked as a crops specialist for several years and then went into field management with positions as Long Island Crops Manager, Maine Area Manager and Zone Manager for New Hampshire, Vermont, and Eastern New York. Mr. Cummings was a past Master of the Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge #49 A.F. and A.M. in Newport. He served on many Methodist Church Committees in Maine, New York and New Hampshire and at the time of his death was a member of the Sebago Center Community Church in Sebago. His hobbies were fishing, gardening, golf and reading.
Mr. Cummings was predeceased by his wife Louise in 2007. They had spent the past 20 years living between their summer home here on Douglas Hill, and their winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Cummings, and Kathryn Malon; two grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Cummings and Clayton Cummings; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, May 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Watson Funeral Home, 71 Maple Street, Cornish. A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at the Sebago Center Community Church. Burial will follow at Babb Cemetery in Sebago. PORTLAND — Laurence C. Pond Jr. died on Jan. 6, 2009, at Seaside Nursing Home.
He was born in Melrose, Mass., on Nov. 22, 1923. He joined the Army in November 1942, and was a sergeant in the 70th Troop Carrier Squadron during the World War II. His hobby was trains. He loved the big locomotives.
He leaves his second wife, Dorothy, of 33 years; a son, Norman of East Baldwin; and a brother, Frances W. Pond of Melrose, Mass.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lorraine; and a son, Laurence Pond III.
He was laid to rest at the Pine Grove Cemetery in South Paris on Friday, May 1.
WATERFORD — Nancy Allen Barker, 65, of Higgins Road, Waterford, passed away on May 2, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Her faith and inner strength amazed everyone who knew her. She was born in Lovell, Oct. 21, 1943, the daughter of Geraldene Galloway and Rex Allen, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy.
She was a kind, loving, generous and extremely caring person with a true heart of gold. She enjoyed spend-ing time with family and friends, gar-dening, crafts, shopping, cooking and going to camp. Her greatest joy came from time spent with her granddaughter, with whom she traveled to her dream destination of Graceland.
She is survived by her loving husband, Errol “John” Barker of Waterford; a daughter, Amy and husband, Floyd Pike, of Stoneham; son, Nicholas and wife, Sharon, of Norway; a beautiful granddaugh-ter, Denali; two brothers, Neil and Linda Allen of Lovell, and Jeffrey and Barbara Allen of Waterford; three sisters, Jane and Dennis Perry of South Paris, Jeannine and Bradley Nelson of Winslow, and Joanne Allen and her partner, Jay Quinn, of Gardiner; two sisters-in-law; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Per Nancy’s request, there are no funeral services. Memorial donations may be made to the Oncology Department of Bridgton Hospital.
NAPLES — Kenneth Morgan Sewall, originally of Gorham, son of the late Kenneth and Estelle Sewall of Bath, Maine passed on May 3, 2009 at Maine Medical Center, Portland.
Morgan leaves his beloved partner of 26 years, Joseph McMurray, origi-nally of Lynn, Massachusetts, his lov-ing sister, Karlene of Windsor, Vermont and dearest friends, Carol and Tom of Hopkington, Massachu-setts.
Morgan and Joe lived in Boston, San Francisco and Monte Rio, California before moving to Naples six years ago. Morgan leaves behind many friends at the Christmas Tree Shops where he worked part-time for the past six years. He was an avid knitter, and had many friends at local yarn and craft shops. His beautiful work has been displayed and is still featured at wild plum in Naples. He will be missed by those who loved him, including his adoring pets, Missy, Chester and Nancy Grace.
We would like to thank the wonderful caregivers of Bridgton Hospital and SCU 4 at MMC who cared for and supported him in his final days, and his physician, Dr. Ann LaMire and staff of Positive Health Care of Portland.
A celebration of Morgan’s life will be held at the convenience of his family.
