David A. KnightsLOVELL — David A. Knights, 86, passed away at The Rehabilitation Center of The Cedars of Portland after a brief illness.
David and his wife of 63 years, Sally Hyde Knights, originally of Bath, had recently moved to Portland from their home in Marblehead, Mass., where they had lived for over 60 years on Greystone Road. Dave and Sally spent every summer at their beloved camp on Kezar Lake in Lovell.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Alonzo Knights and Gretchen (Brown) Knights, he was raised in Wayland, Mass., and graduated from Belmont Hill School. He later attended Brown University. In 1943, he joined the Army, wishing to serve his country in World War II. After the war, David was brought by his father, Alonzo, into the family business, Massachusetts Machine Shop, Inc., headquartered in Boston. He would later succeed his father as President of the company, and would expand it to another facility in New Hampshire. David was a former trustee of the Hyde School in Bath, and long-time member of the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, where he kept his sailboat. When winter came, David could be found skiing at Pleasant Mountain or Sugarloaf with his children. David’s favorite pastime was sharing adventurous fun at “Camp David,” affectionately nicknamed by his six grandchildren. He was happiest cruising down Kezar Lake with Sally on his Chris Craft Runabout, water-skiing, and climbing mountains with the grandchildren, and driving around Lovell in his blue kit Bugatti. His perfect day would end with a sail and a gathering of family and friends on the porch at sunset. What David’s family and friends will remember and miss most is his smile. He was the most engaging person and would always have a joke or just a kind word for everyone he met.
David is survived by his wife Sally; daughters Heidi Knights Adams of Bradenton, Fla., Gretchen Knights Geddis of Lovell and Nina Knights of Centerville, Mass.; a son, Jeffrey Hyde Knights of Marblehead, Mass.; his sister Deborah Knights Smith of Southport; six grandchildren, two great-grandsons, a niece and nephew.
