Nellie M. Ward

NORWAY — Nellie M. Ward, 101 of Casco, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the Norway Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Naples on June 30, 1912, the oldest of five children to George R. Edson and Carrie Winslow Edson. After her junior year at Casco High School, she stayed home to raise her two brothers and two sisters after the untimely death of her mother.

Nellie met her husband, William Ward, at her father’s general store in Cook Mills, and they were married June 14, 1931, and enjoyed 65 years together. They had four children: Carrie, Franklin, Randall and Erwin.

Her family included 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, all her pride and joy. As a homemaker and seamstress she was able to reside in her home until she was 97 years old. Her scrapbooks are remarkable.

She was predeceased by her daughter Carrie and her husband John Judkins, a son Franklin, a daughter-in-law Susan, and granddaughters Lori and Karen.

Many thanks go to Sylvia Swanson, Diehl Estes, Ronald Plummer, Loretta Thurlow and all of her friends and neighbors, and especially the Norway Rehab staff who so graciously watched over her. They made each other laugh.

A graveside service will be held in May at the Edes Falls Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.
