Naples woman dies in ATV crash

A 24-year-old Naples woman died early Wednesday morning as the result of an all-terrain vehicle accident on River Road, near the intersection of Edes Falls Road.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Warden Service are investigating the fatal crash that occurred at 4:53 a.m. The deceased was identified as Shanan Loud, formerly of Hiram.

At press time, investigators said two ATVs had been traveling on the River Road when one of the ATVs, occupied by a male and female, left the roadway, went airborne into some trees then flipped over, coming to rest in the Crooked River. The occupants of this ATV were treated by Naples Fire/EMS. The male occupant was transported to Bridgton Hospital and was later LifeFlighted to Central Maine Medical Center with a serious injury. The female occupant was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. Injured in the crash was Johnathan Caswell, 28 of Naples, formerly of Randolph.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, however, speed and alcohol do appear to be factors, investigators reported. Neither Loud nor Caswell had been wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
