WINTER HAVEN FLA. & SEBAGO — Muriel (Sally) Francis Hammond, 91, from Carefree Country Club, Winter Haven, Fla., and Sebago, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015.
She was born at home in Hiram on Nov., 13, 1924, to Charles Edward Hammond and Cecile Day Hammond. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood with lots of love, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy, Class of 1943.
Sally attended Gorham State Teachers College in Gorham, and graduated in 1947. She headed to her first teaching job in Rangeley, where she taught for two years. She then moved to Middlefield, Conn., where she taught middle school mathematics for 35 years.
Sally enjoyed her summers with her teaching friends and family at their Sebago Lake cottage they rightly named “Teacher's Pet.” They made Teacher's Pet and their rental cottages a wonderful place to go, and were well-known for their hospitality. Sally and her friends enjoyed many trips almost annually to many places around the world.
Sally retired from teaching in Middlefield, Conn,. in 1984, and came to the Carefree Life in 1986 at Carefree Country Club, in Winter Haven, Fla. She was a very active member of the Carefree community and looked forward to coming back every fall.

Sally was an avid walker, logging hundreds of miles in all fifty states in her retirement. She also climbed Mt. Katahdin in Maine when she was 75, and completed the Mount Desert Island Marathon in 2005 at 80.

Sally is predeceased by her sister Marguerite Smith; brother Edward Charles Hammond of Fryeburg; and her housemates for over 50 years, Carie Hammond and Martha Strickland of Middlefield, Conn., and Sebago.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews, who enjoyed spending time with their Aunt Sally at Sebago Lake. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
