Mac MacGregor Jr.

SEBAGO — Murdock Malcolm “Mac” MacGregor Jr., 83, of Sebago, formerly of Wilton, Conn., died Sunday, July 17, 2022, at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Mac was born on Oct. 7, 1938, in New York City, oldest son of, Murdock Malcolm and Leonore (Smith) MacGregor, Sr. Mac grew up in Great Neck, Long Island. He
graduated from Delbarton Preparatory School in Morristown, N.J., in 1956. Before joining the United States Marine Corps, he attended The Ohio State University. While in the Marine Corps, Mac was a Presidential Guard for President Eisenhower. While serving, he met his best friend, and future brother-in-law, Joel Ackle, who introduced him to the love of his life, Adele. He and Adele married in 1962, and spent over 60 wonderful years together.

Mac designed and built the family home, where he and Adele raised their two children. Mac spent most of his professional career as an entrepreneur in the construction industry. In addition, he was one of the founders of the Cannondale Corporation, best known for manufacturing high-end bicycles. Always creative, Mac redesigned and rebuilt his summer home, in North Sebago, where he and Adele eventually retired. Sebago held a special place in Mac’s heart, as his parents first bought their family summer property in Sebago, in 1954 to enjoy with their three sons. Today, the fifth generation of MacGregors continues to come to their beloved Sebago.

Mac was a member of the Wilton Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, where he served as Elder, and on the Building Committee. He and Adele welcomed many friends and relatives into their home over the years, where they were always made to feel part of his family. In 1980, the MacGregors welcomed their honorary son, Didier Vercruysse, into their home, through AFS for Didier’s Senior year. That experience resulted in a long, loving family relationship that continues today.

Mac was passionate about life, design, history, building, sketching and painting, but his passion for family surmounted all other pieces of his life.

He is loved by his wife, Adele, of Sebago; his children, Anne Chatillon (John) and Murdock Malcolm III (Jennifer) MacGregor; grandchildren Roger, Michael (Sarah), Jack (Libby) Willson, Madeline Willson French (Gabe), Amelia, Murdock IV, and Brennan MacGregor; step-grandchildren Kirsten and Carter Chatillon, and Catherine Bourne (Davis), great grandchildren Wade and Adeline Willson; siblings John (Norma) and Roderick (Joan) MacGregor, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother-in-law, Joel Ackle, and brother and sister-in-law, William and Denise Shields, sister- in-law Anne Margulies.

A memorial service for Mac will be held on Friday, July 22, at 2 p.m., at the North Sebago United Methodist Church. A private family interment will be at the North Sebago Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.
