Martha A. Pettengill

CUMBERLAND — Martha Annette (Stone) Pettengill, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, at Gosnell Memorial House in Scarborough surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Portland, Feb. 27, 1923, to Ralph and Corrine Stone. After graduating from Deering High School in June 1942, she married Richard A. Pettengill and they spent the next 74 years together. They loved the outdoors and always enjoyed camping with friends and family. Together, either in their RV or auto, they visited most of the United States including a memorable trip to Alaska.

Martha was at her happiest when surrounded by her loving family whether for the holidays, birthdays or just a cup of coffee. For those times, she will be greatly missed. She worked for the Cumberland school system lunch program for 20 years until her retirement. Through the years, many former students would recognize her and stop to talk, which always made her day.

Martha was also an active member in the Pythian Sisters Nonesuch Temple #50, Scarborough.

Martha was predeceased by her husband, Dick; and her three sisters, Sylvia Seyford, Lucille Stein and Marquerite Wheelock.

She is survived by her four children, Judy Wiles, Steve Pettengill of Harrison, Richard Pettengill and Nancy Butland of Cumberland; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to: Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route One, Scarborough, ME 04074 or online at hospiceofsouthernmaine.org/give
