PORTLAND — Madelyn A. Amergian, 87, of Portland, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at the Gosnell House in Scarborough.

Born in Portland, she was the daughter of James and Florence Duran Thaxter. She attended Portland schools. For 30 years, she was employed by New England Tel. & Tel., retiring in 1985. She started as an operator, retiring as a service advisor. She was very proud that she received the golden parachute in her early 50s, enabling her to pursue her other many interests for over 31 years.

Madelyn was active in the Pioneers. She collected antique glass and toothpick holders. She enjoyed doing crafts, attending craft fairs, gardening and sewing.

She was predeceased by two sons, Kerry D. Keefe in 2015 and William “Winky” T. Amergian in 2002; and her brother, Charles Thaxter.

Madelyn is survived by a son, Steven Keefe of Naples; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

An hour of visiting will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, followed by a funeral service at noon at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park.
