Lucille Chapman

SCARBOROUGH — Lucille T. “Tommie” Chapman, 91, of Windham, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Bangor, on Aug. 13, 1923, the daughter of the late George and Eleanor Thompson. She was educated in Portland and graduated from Deering High School Class of 1941.

She joined the WAVES, a division of the U.S. Navy, in World War II where she worked at the Fleet Post Office in New York City for a year and a half, then several months in Washington, D.C. until the war ended.

She attended the University of Maine at Orono, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration. While attending college, she met the love of her life, David Chapman of Portland, and they were married on Aug. 27, 1949. He predeceased her on June 9, 1996.

After graduating from UMO, Tommie and Dave moved to Manchester, Conn., where they lived several years. In 1954, they returned to Maine and lived in Portland for seven years. In 1961, they moved to Windham to what the family referred to as “the farm.” She resided there until just weeks before her death.

Tommie was a very talented homemaker. She made all of her own curtains, refinished furniture and knit sweaters and wool socks for her children and grandchildren. Her paintings can be found in every room of the farm and she belonged to a quilting guild, where she made as many friends as beautiful quilts. She enjoyed the birds, deer and wild turkeys that visited daily outside her kitchen window and was a voracious reader.

She enjoyed spending summers at her modest camp in Scarborough, where she was content with the basics and loved the cool nights near the ocean.

She leaves two sons and a daughter, James Chapman of Raymond, Scott Chapman of Cumberland and Anne Chapman of Windham; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on May 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Stevens Avenue, Portland. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
