CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Louise James Doughty, 78, died peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at her home on Deer Point, surrounded by her family.

Born in New York, N.Y., to Proctor and Ruth (Dunbar) James, Louise spent her early years in Brooklyn and Staten Island, attending public school there. The family then moved to Brockton, Mass., where she attended Brockton Elementary School. She then attended Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., where she was nicknamed “Jesse James.” After graduating Dana Hall in 1953, she went on to Middlebury College, where she majored in French and was on the softball team. She attended nursing school in Wrentham, Mass., Harvard extension courses, as well as studies in anatomy, physiology and psychology at USM.

Louise worked for many years at Pineland Hospital in New Gloucester. After “retiring” to Chebeague Island, she worked at the Chebeague Inn, the Chebeague Transportation Co. and the town of Chebeague.

Always an active community member; she was a Girl Scout troop leader in Brockton, Mass., vice president of the Chebeague Island Council, Island Planning Board, Whalers singing group, Island Rescue EMT, Historical Society, Tuesday quilting and the Ladies Aid Church Group.

Louise loved to travel, taking a trip to Canada for a month every fall. She was an avid cook and gardener and dabbled in photography, however knitting was her passion. She took pride in entering her work in the Cumberland Fair, earning many blue ribbons.

Louise was predeceased by her parents; a son, Jeffrey H. Doughty in 1986; and her daughter, Alnah C. Doughty in 2005.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Cecil A. Doughty of Chebeague Island; a son Christopher of Chebeague Island; and her two daughters, Linda Larrabee of West Bath and Melissa Doughty of Casco; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at Chebeague Island Methodist Church, 258 North Rd., Chebeague Island, on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at 1 p.m. Please visit www.advantageportland.com to sign guestbook and leave condolences for the family.
