Lloyd F. Martin, 90

RAYMOND — Lloyd F. Martin, 90, died on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at his home, after a long illness.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1924, in Damariscotta, the son of Margaret and Alexander Martin. Lloyd graduated from Raymond schools and trade school.

He began his career as the janitor for Raymond Elementary School. Soon thereafter, he purchased a school bus and earned a contract to transport half of the Raymond children to school. It wasn’t long before Lloyd purchased a second bus and held the contract with the town for 26 years. He was also instrumental in starting the first hot lunch program.

In 1953, Lloyd and his wife Gloria started L.F. Martin Institutional Wholesale Grocers to service summer camps and schools in the surrounding area. As the business steadily grew, they added to the square footage of the warehouse as finances allowed. When Lloyd “junior” returned from service in the military, the company name changed to L.F. Martin & Son Institutional Wholesale Grocers. All the family was employed, as well as many friends and neighbors.

In 1976, he purchased a parcel of land in Raymond and created housing development known as Martin Heights. After a fire in 1988, the business was sold to Jordan Foods in Portland.

Lloyd retired after the sale of the business and spent his retirement with Gloria traveling the world over, although Florida holds a special place in their hearts. Lloyd and Gloria enjoyed their lives together especially as their family grew.

Lloyd was predeceased by two brothers, Marvin and Roland Martin.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Gloria Cressey of Raymond; his son Lloyd Martin Jr. of Raymond; two grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route One, Scarborough, ME 04074.
