Linda L. Afthim, 65

RAYMOND — Linda L. Afthim, 65, of Raymond, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2013, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Farmington on Sept. 23, 1947, the daughter of the late Almond Rackliffe and Carolyn (Buxton) Grover. Linda was educated and graduated from Yarmouth High School. She furthered her education at Southern Maine Teachers College.

In 1970, she married Philip R. Afthim Sr. and they began a family. Over the years, she sold advertising for The Courier Free Press, owned and operated Mr. Handy’s Cleaning Service, Chilly Willy’s Ice Cream Shop and most notably the Beacon Lanes and Pizza Lounge. Linda also provided foster parenting services for numerous children.

She enjoyed Foxwoods, bowling, bingo and summers at Old Orchard Beach with family and friends. She truly enjoyed all holidays especially Christmas and Easter, which included Easter egg hunting. A true woman, she was best known for her selfless acts of kindness.

Family members include her children, Philip R. Afthim Jr., Paul R. Afthim, Pamela R. Wing, Patricia R. Afthim and Patrick R. Afthim; and their father, Philip R. Afthim Sr. She will be sadly missed by foster children, Marie Libby and Chelsi Katan; and her seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Al Rackliffe; and a fiance of nine years, Thomas Darby, who was the love of her life. Thomas’ children, Lisa and Anna Darby also survive her.

Visitation was held at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham on Sunday, April 7, 2013, from 2 to 5 p.m. and again on Monday, April 8, 2013, from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service.
