WINDHAM — Leonard Robert Sanborn Sr., 94, died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2015 at his home.

He was born on April 17, 1921 in New Gloucester, a son of Lorenzo and Gladys Whitaker Sanborn. Leonard graduated from Windham High School and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Red Bulls Battalion in Italy and North Africa.

Leonard worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad and then the Maine Central Railroad for over 30 years from which he retired.

He was married to Pauline Timmons for almost 60 years. She passed away in 2002. Leonard belonged to the American Legion, the VFW and was a member of the Windham Historical Society. He enjoyed gardening, genealogy, spending time with his grandchildren and family reunions.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Sanborn; and sisters, Judith Keenan and Marilyn Campbell.

Survivors include his sons, Leonard R. Sanborn Jr. of Standish and Timothy P. Sanborn of Windham; brothers, Richard Sanborn of Raymond and Donald Sanborn of Kennebunkport; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held on Monday, Dec. 7 at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church, UCC, 723 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. Burial followed in Smith Cemetery, Windham.
