Karl Nyberg

Karl H. Nyberg, 86, of Bridgton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at Bridgton Health & Residential Care Center after a long illness with dementia.

Karl was born in Narpes, Finland on January 25, 1930, the son of Karl J. and Edith H. Nyberg, and grew up on the family farm where his lifelong love of animals began. He was a soccer goalie and ran as a sprinter in track and field events. In 1961 he came to New York City, where he began his career as a carpenter and met Raili Niemi. He married her on Sept. 12, 1964, and in 1969 they moved to Stamford, Conn., where they built a house and started a family. Most summer evenings he could be found in the family vegetable garden. In 1994 they retired and moved to Bridgton, where he enjoyed watching baseball and read- ing biographies and books about history.

Karl is predeceased by his brother Erik Nyberg and sister-in-law Anita of Narpes, Finland; and brother-in-law Teo Bradd of Overmark. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Raili Nyberg; his son Michael Nyberg of Stamford, Conn.; his brother Gustav (Anita) Nyberg of Stockholm, Sweden; his sister Elsie Bradd, of Overmark, Finland; as well many cousins, nieces and nephews.
