June Hammond

FRYEBURG — June Walker Hammond, 81, of Fryeburg, died peacefully at home Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017.

She was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on June 1, 1936, to Fred M. and Christine (Hofer) Walker, the oldest of two children. She was educated in local schools, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy in the class of 1954.

June attended Wellesley College and earned a degree in Economics in 1958. She attained a Master’s of Science degree for Teachers in Mathematics from UNH in 1962. June’s work experiences began early as she sold fireworks in Brownfield at the age of 12. Other local area jobs were at Camp Rapputak, Pleasant Mountain Lodge, and selling tickets at Fryeburg Fair while in high school. After graduating from Wellesley she taught at Kennett High School and coached basketball.

On June 23, 1962, she married the love of her life, Ed Hammond, and subsequently honeymooned, tenting across the United States. June and Ed later moved to East Lyme, Conn., started their family and both taught in East Lyme Schools until 1977. After retiring they returned to Maine to raise their family. June substituted at Fryeburg Academy, sold real estate with Bill Severance Sr. in Lovell, and truly enjoyed her retirement job working at Fryeburg Fair and serving as the Fair Secretary for 25 years.

June involved herself in the Fryeburg community for many years, as a member and president of the Interstate Sno Goers Snowmobile Club and the Fryeburg Library Club. She worked in the Fryeburg Extension Office for 20 years, the Fryeburg Academy Alumni Association, serving as president for two years, and also served as a Trustee of Fryeburg Academy for 12 years. She served as president of the Maine State Fair Association for two years.

Ed and June had many adventures traveling with their young family and continued throughout their lives, spending time with family was always the treasured goal. In later retirement years winters were spent in Winter Haven, Florida and wandering about in their camper. When spring came they returned to Maine to be with their family and friends.

June was predeceased by her husband, Edward C. Hammond. She is survived by her three children, Valerie (Hammond) Tripp of Fryeburg, Gregory and Debbie (Durgin) Hammond of Auburn, and Todd and Darcy (Shiers) Hammond of Windham; along with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her sister Lois (Walker) Moulton and husband Jack of Winter Haven, Florida.

Services will be held at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds Expo Center on Friday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll County Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 432, North Conway, NH 03860.
