PORTLAND — John “Jack” Joyce, 89, formerly of Portland, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014 at Togus VA Medical Center.
Jack was born on March 25, 1925 in Gorham’s Corner, Portland, to the late Martin and Delia (Connolly) Joyce. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during WWII, having served five campaigns in Italy, Germany, Austria, North Africa and Japan. Among his various campaign ribbons, Jack was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism.
Following his return to Portland, Jack was employed with Jarka Corp. for 50 years as a longshoreman, retiring in 1985. In addition, he also worked as a Merchant Marine and as a construction worker. He was an avid hunter. Having a deep love for his faith and Irish heritage, Jack was a former communicant of St. Dominic’s Church.
Jack married Barbara Carey in 1952. She predeceased him on Sept. 24, 1990.
In addition to his wife, Jack was predeceased by his daughter, Judy Smith; son, Peter Joyce; and brother, Martin F. “Dutchy” Joyce.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Moore of Massachusetts, Sharon Greenleaf of Portland, Nancy Provencher of Georgia, Maureen Joyce of Westbrook, and Kathleen Joyce of Portland; sons, John J. Joyce Jr. of Raymond and Ralph Corbin of Florida; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Monday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A funeral service followed at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors followed at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland. For online guestbook, please visit www.ctcrawford.com
