John G. Handrahan, 83

FRAMINGHAM, MASS.  —  John G. Handrahan, 83, of Framingham, Mass., died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Waltham, Mass., on Aug. 16, 1930, the son of the late John W. Handrahan and Mary E. (Murdock) Handrahan.

John is survived by his wife Mary (Downing) Handrahan of Framingham; and his children, William Handrahan and his partner Eva of Maine, John Handrahan and his wife Meghan of Hopkinton, Mass., and Susan Handrahan of Framingham. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jason Handrahan and his wife Janice of Woonsocket, R.I.; Erica O Mahony and her husband Bryan of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; Zach Handrahan of Ashland, Mass.; and Olivia Handrahan of Hopkinton, Mass. Also surviving are his three great-granddaughters, Julianna, Jillian and Jane. John and Mary would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year on May 8th.

John has been a resident of Framingham for over 58 years, and spent his formative years in Wayland, Mass. He was a graduate of Wayland High School with the Class of 1948. John received his Associate s of Science Degree from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts. He served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, followed by a career as a Service Manager at Commonwealth Gas Company for 35 years. While residing in Framingham since 1955, John served as a town meeting member and a member of the Framingham Parks Department.

John was a hockey enthusiast and spent countless hours supporting his children and grandchildren in their many sports activities. He enjoyed many summers on Long Lake in Harrison, Maine with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His family will receive family and friends Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a service celebrating John s life at 11:30 in the Bryant Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte. 30), Wayland, Mass. Private family interment at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham, Mass., will be held at a later date.
