Janet L. Valley, 61

FRYEBURG — Janet Lee Kinney Valley, 61, of Bridgton, died of Pick’s disease (frontotemporal dementia) on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Fryeburg Residential Care Center.

She was born on April 5, 1952, at Chanute Air Force Base in Ill. She lived in Urbana, Ill., until 1956 and then moved to Beaver, Pa., with her family. She was educated at Beaver area schools and Shippensburg State College. She moved to Bridgton, where she lived for 41 years. She met and married Alvin Thomas Valley and together they raised one son, Reed Thomas Valley.

After working in various retail stores she, with the help of her husband, opened Hezekiah’s Cupboard, a store dedicated to fine handcrafts, quilts, porcelain dolls, wooden toys and other items made by local artists, stressing the handcrafts of Maine residents. She was active in the Chickadee Quilters and other community activities, and offered handcraft classes.

In addition to her son, Reed, she leaves her mother, Mary Gotshalk Kinney of Urbana, Ill.; sisters, Susan Kinney of Charlotte, N.C., Carol Kinney of Eighty Four, Pa., and Amy Kinney of Bethesda, Md.; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Kris Kinney of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; nieces, Stephanie Preston of Carlisle, Pa., Rachel Preston of Charlotte, N.C., and Emily Kinney of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a nephew, Hayden Kinney of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; several great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-niece; and one special girl, Mahayla Tracy of Bridgton. She was predeceased by her husband, Tom, on April 13, 2013; and her father, Joseph N. Kinney III of Syracuse, N.Y. in 2008.

The family would like to express its deepest appreciation for the excellent care given to Janet at Fryeburg Residential Care Center by all staff, medical and professional personnel involved in her care, and Androscoggin hospice caregivers.

A memorial celebration will be held at a later date to be announced, to honor both Janet and Tom. Anyone interested in honoring Janet could make a donation to research being done on Pick’s Disease or to a charity of their choice.
