Janet E. Crockett, 95

RAYMOND — Janet E. Crockett, 95, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at the Springbrook Center in Westbrook after a long illness.
She was born Janet E. Howard on Sept. 5, 1919 in Portland to Frank and Ethel Howard. She attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School.
As a young woman, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and married William J. Grant, her husband of 38 years. She held a variety of positions including service in the W.A.C.S, secretary to law firms and congressmen, and receptionist at North American Aviation.
She returned to Maine in the role of caregiver to husband Bill until his death in 1987. She returned to the workplace at Martin’s Point and later moved to Raymond, where she married Robert E. Crockett. As his caregiver, she had time to develop talents in knitting, crochet and cake decorating. At 82, she became an avid quilter, making several quilts for children at Maine Medical Center. She became a fan of the Boston Red Sox, crossword puzzles, cooking and gardening.
Janet was a strong and passionate woman with a deep love of family, trees and the ocean. She had a great spirit of adventure and she will be remembered for her quick wit, creativity, and ready smile. Her sense of humor and indomitable spirit remain exemplars to all who were privileged to call her friend.
Janet is survived by her son, Barry D. Grant of Springfield, Va.; daughter, Geraldine Thorpe of Casco; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration to honor Janet’s life was held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Hall Funeral Home in Casco. A private burial will take place later with family in attendance at Veterans Cemetery, Togus.
