James S. Evans

NEENAH, WISC. — James Stuart Evans, 77, of Appleton, Wisc., and Bridgton, Maine, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018, with family and friends by his side at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah, a week after a fall on the ice on the walkway to his office at Lawrence University in Appleton.

Jim was born Jan. 16, 1941, the son of Frank Edwin Evans and Margaret Stuart Evans of West Bridgton.

He grew up on the family farm, attended local public schools, and graduated from Bridgton High School, Class of 1958, Bates College, B.S. (1962), Princeton University, M.A. (1964), Ph.D. (1966).

Jim is survived by his sister Dorothy (Dolly) Evans Guillen, her husband Pedro Guillen and their two sons Steven Evans Guillen and wife Kim and children Tristan and Emelina, and Nicolas Pedro Tasse-Guillen and wife Tania and children Treble and Clio; his aunt Anna Stuart Hill; many cousins; and his best friend Gregory Trimper  and wife Melissa.

He was predeceased by his parents and his infant brother Howard Lewis Evans.

Jim taught chemistry and computer science at Lawrence University, Appleton Wisc., from 1966 until his retirement in 2011, after 45 years of teaching and writing textbooks.

He planned to make the Evans Farm his year-round home this coming autumn. He had been dividing his time between Wisconsin and Maine with vacations in England each year. He was dedicated to his aunt and to his sister and her family, to studying the genealogy of the Stuart and Evans families, and to restoring the family farmhouse and barn and maintaining the hayfields and flower gardens. His sister Dolly will continue that project.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m., at Chandler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 8 Elm St. Bridgton. Condolences and tributes may be shared at chandlerfunerals.com
