James MacDonald Jr.

SCARBOROUGH — James MacDonald Jr., 99, of Scarborough, died peacefully on Oct. 12, 2010, at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on May 9, 1911, in North Quincy, Mass., the son of James and Margaret Elizabeth (Harris) McDonald Sr. James was educated locally in Massachusetts and was a 1930 graduate of Quincy High School. He attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for two years, graduating in 1932.

During WWII, James served in the Navy as a chief engineer, remaining in the Naval Reserves until retiring after 25 years with the rank of Commander.

James married Anna Gertrude Quinlan on Oct. 14, 1939, in Dallas, Texas and began raising his family.

He was a Safety Engineer Inspector for Royal Globe Insurance.
James enjoyed sailing on the ocean, camping, gardening; spending time with his family and friends, preparing firewood. He moved to Scarborough in 1983 from South Portland.

James was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife Anna in August of 2007; and his sister, Margaret M. “Flora” McDonald in 1984.

Surviving are two daughters, Ellen F. Broy of Scarborough and Trisha A. Blanchard of Windham; two sons, James D. MacDonald of Sebago and Philip E. MacDonald of Quincy, Mass.; eight grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and six nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, at the chapel, followed by a 12:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Church, Main Street, South Portland. Interment will follow in Brooklawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Portland.
