Ivy Khiel, 80

DENMARK — Ivy Khiel, 80, of Denmark passed peacefully into the arms of angels on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013. Ivy spent her final weeks surrounded by her loving family and friends at her home on Pickett Hill.

Ivy was born on April 21, 1932 to John and Alma Rhode Veno of Denmark.

Ivy met her husband, John, during the fire of 1947 and married him two years later on Dec. 4, 1949. In the early years of their marriage, the Khiels lived on Shin Pond, where they formed lifelong friendships and memories they reminisced about for years. Though they only lived on the pond for two years while John worked in the sawmill, this was a period of time John and Ivy always cherished. John and Ivy returned to Denmark to start their family after their years on Shin Pond. Once the couples’ three children were in school, Ivy worked at local shoe shops, where she made many friends.

A proud lifelong resident of Denmark, Ivy was very much a homebody. While she enjoyed the camping trips she and John took with their family and friends, she was always perfectly content to stay right on Pickett Hill. Whether she was cooking a meal for the whole family or chatting with a neighbor over a Diet Coke, Ivy always made visitors to her house feel right at home with her warmth and endless supply of great stories.

Ivy will be remembered for her feisty spirit and loving, warm heart.

Ivy was predeceased by her husband, John; and her daughter, Theresa Khiel Felser.

Ivy is survived by her eldest daughter, Darlene Seavey; son, John Khiel; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be missed deeply by the many family members and friends whose lives she touched.

A memorial service honoring Ivy’s life will be held at Berry Cemetery in Denmark this spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route One, #1, Scarborough, ME, 04074.
