GORHAM — Knowing that his athletes seem to perform at their peak potential in late-afternoon meets, Coach Kevin McDonald felt this week was the week to avoid experimentation.
It worked as Fryeburg Academy logged Top 5 finishes in indoor track & field meet competition last Friday at the University of Southern Maine field house in Gorham.
The Raider girls were fourth out of eight schools, while the FA boys were third behind Greely and Cape Elizabeth.
Jeremiah Schrader, Spencer Thomas and Max Kummer went 1, 2, 3 in the junior 55m dash with times of 7.27, 7.31 and 7.41 respectively.
“Miah just missed the State standard and all three improved their times. This is quite a feat as there were eight other schools at the meet,” Coach McDonald said. “Coach Collins has been working with these young sprinters and they are seeing the results when they listen to coach.”
They followed the 55m performance by taking 1, 2 and 6 in the 200m dash. Times were: Schrader 25.23, Thomas 25.74 and Kummer 26.78.
Along with Cole LeBlond, the foursome won the 4x200 relay in 1:50.37, ahead of Cape Elizabeth with a 1:52.39.
“Very impressive evening for this group,” Coach McDonald said.

Liuke Yang and TJ Rose just missed the standard in the 400m, but coaches look for them to qualify this Friday. Yang posted a 56.42 and Rose a 56.79 (winning time was 54.43).
Baha Buhudir tossed the shot put 36-09, good for third place (wt 40-1.50).
“Baha was just back from Turkey and picked the shot up on Thursday. We worked through the progressions and away he went. We will work on technique this week and a new school record could be in Baha’s future as he only needs to add four feet,” Coach McDonald said.
There were new school records: in the long jump, Liuke Yang at 19-00.75, good for first place; Victor Yang the triple jump 41-07.50, first place and high jump at 6-feet, first place.
“Victor stopped jumping at six feet. He was the winner and the triple jump was underway. Victor has a huge future as this was his first track meet in America,” Coach McDonald said. “A fantastic athlete and a student of the sport, he takes his training very seriously and is a joy to work with. He is as they say ‘the real deal.’ To say the least, we are very excited to see just what Victor can accomplish this season.”
On the girls’ side, Skye Collins won the 55m (7.96) and the 200m (29.53) in the junior division.
Meeting the State standard in the 55m (9.10), Brea Conder continues to improve in the shot put (23-7.50, fourth place).
“We have a great group working with the shot and its fun to see the improvement as they attempt to master this difficult event,” Coach McDonald said.
Anna Lastra won the 400m in a very fast 1:03.87. Anna has met the State standard in the 400m, the 800m, the mile and the two-mile showing incredible range.

Anna teamed with Orianga Inirio, Skye Collins and Emily McDermith to win the 4x200m relay with a very fast 1:58.49.
“Coach Collins and I are very pleased with the progress being made in the early season. However, what is even more encouraging is that the athletes are starting to do the work and see the results,” Coach McDonald said.
