Hildegarde M. Armstrong, 91

Hildegarde M. Armstrong

BUXTON — Hildegarde (Hilda) Marie Cowett Armstrong, 91, passed away on Dec. 22, 2012, after enduring the effects of Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

Born the youngest of five on June 25, 1921, to Helen and James Cowett of Limestone, she was raised on the family farm, attended local schools, and graduated from Caribou High School.

While in Connecticut working for Colt Manufacturing as an inspection specialist, she met her husband of 63 years, Stanley S. Armstrong. After his service in World War II, they married and moved back to Maine, living for years in Norridgewock and later in Fort Fairfield before retiring in Buxton in 1985.

While Hilda worked outside the home for many years, her focus of life was the health, happiness and success of her family. As a caring and trusting mother and housewife, she put her heart and soul into providing a stable, loving, and wholesome home life for her children. Through many challenges, Hilda’s sense of what really matters carried everyone to better times and richer lives.

While shy, she was always quick to smile and affectionately tease. Hilda read her Bible daily, applying the teachings to family life. She enjoyed being outdoors, and whether going for long walks, skiing, or just picking wild strawberries, nature renewed her. Hilda excelled in the kitchen. Her country style meals and delectable baking had her friends asking themselves over for dinner.

Hilda was predeceased by husband Stanley; and son, David Brian.

Surviving are her sons, Daniel J. Armstrong of Buxton, Stanley D. Armstrong of Raymond and Jeffery M. Armstrong of Fort Fairfield; her daughter, Jennifer M. Marden of Boothbay; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; as well as many extended family and friends.

There will be no public services, but a family ceremony will be scheduled at the Madison gravesite in the spring. Arrangements are with Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, Buxton.

Remembrances may be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) in her name.
