Helen J. Gioino, 92

BENNINGTON, VT — Helen Jane Gioino, 92, a resident of South Stream Road, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Larry McLeod, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

She was born in Canton, Ohio, April 13, 1921. Helen was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Bessie F. (Smith) Sprague. She received her education in Canton and was a graduate of Lehman High School in Canton. Helen later attended the Akron School of Nursing. For two years Helen served overseas during World War II as an Army Nurse in Italy, where she attained the rank as a Lieutenant. It was there she met her husband, Thomas V. Gioino and they married on Feb. 10, 1946.

For over 25 years Helen was employed as a nurse at the Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, N.J. She was an avid Mets fan and loved sports. In 1975 Helen and Tom retired to Sweden, Maine, where they enjoyed gardening, cross-country skiing and many wonderful friends and neighbors. Tom died on Oct. 8, 2001, and Helen moved to Bennington in May of 2004.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Larry McLeod of Bennington; two sons, Thomas Gioino Jr. of Bedminster, N.J., and Angelo F. Gioino of Clermont, Fla.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Bridgton, Maine in late Spring, 2014, and the burial will take place in the family lot in the Sanderson Cemetery in Sweden.
