Harriett E. Bigelow

WINDHAM — Harriett E. Bigelow, 93, of Windham, formerly of North Yarmouth, died on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011.

She was born in Pownal on May 20, 1918, one of 18 children of Mary L. (Fortin) and Harry Blackstone.

Harriett was an accomplished cook, having owned and operated Corner Cupboard on Main Street in Freeport, followed by Bigelow’s Lunch on Mill Street in Freeport, and finally Pine Valley Lodge at Twin Bridges in Harrison. In later years, she became a CNA and worked at Sweetland’s, now Coastal Manor, and as a private duty nurse in the area.

Harriett enjoyed being outdoors gardening, bird watching, fishing for mackerel or simply being among nature. She was a lifetime member of the Pownal Grange. At other times, Harriett loved playing the slots at Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and Hollywood Slots.

Harriett will be remembered for her feisty, independent character who could express herself directly and sometimes outspokenly to whoever was in earshot should the occasion arise. She was very protective of her “boys” and a wonderful mother-in-law to Pat, and a friend to anyone who came into her circle. She could cook anything under the sun, make a meal out of anything at hand and make fried clams that were second to none. She also made it a point to teach all of her children how to cook.

Harriett is survived by her children, Marrylee Woodbury of Florida and Arlin Bigelow of Harrison; stepdaughter, Audrey Merrill of Skowhegan; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roscoe Bigelow, who died in 1984; her sons, Harry Lee Bigelow and Roscoe “Rusty” Bigelow; her stepdaughter, Evelyn Barbari; her 17 brothers and sisters; and her nephew.

Harriett is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Pownal and a memorial service will be celebrated on her birthday, May 20, 2012. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share your condolences, memories and tributes with her family.
