Gwendolyn F. Cadman

Gwendolyn Fay Cadman, 84, of Bridgton, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2011 after a long stay at Ledgewood Nursing Home in Windham.

She was born in Harrison on Dec. 17, 1926, the daughter of George E. and Evelyn L. Gammon Leavitt. She graduated from Bridgton High School in the Class of 1944. She married John Avard Cadman, who predeceased her in 1974.

Gwen was employed as a nursing aide at Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital, now Bridgton Hospital, and had been a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the United Methodist Church in Bridgton, the United Methodist Women’s and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post #67. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and made the best chocolate crème pie in the family.  She also liked snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and selecting and painting on rocks.

She was predeceased by her husband John (Jack) Avard Cadman; four brothers, Ernest, Cyril, Ralph and George Leavitt; a sister, Nellie Kilgore; and a grandson.

She is survived by a brother, Raymond Leavitt; a daughter, Julie Nevells; two sons, Wayne A. Cadman and John C. Cadman; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gwen’s memory can be made to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, 1389 Bridgton Road, Fryeburg, ME 04037, as Gwen loved animals.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery in Bridgton on the Kansas Road. Following the services will be a remembrance gathering at the United Methodist Church in Bridgton on Main Street.
