Gertrude E. Smith

KEARSARGE, N.H. — Gertrude Evans (GEE) Smith, 84, of Kearsarge, N.H., died on Nov. 2, 2010, at the Merriman House in North Conway, N.H., after a lengthy illness.

Born in Summit, N.J., Gertrude lived in East Orange, N.J. until her marriage to Dwight A. Smith in 1948. After their marriage she and Dwight lived in Reading, Mass., Pembroke, N.H. and Charlestown, N.H. Gertrude, Dwight and her family moved to Portland where they lived from 1960 to 1973, before finally settling in Kearsarge, N.H.

After Gertrude graduated from Douglass College in New Jersey, she was employed as a dietician at Malden Hospital in Malden, Mass. With the birth of her first child in 1949 she became a stay-at-home mom. In 1974, she took on full time management duties at the Brass Whistle Gift Shop located in Conway Scenic Railroad’s restored North Conway, N.H. station, which position she held until retirement in 1990.

In her retirement years, Gertrude enjoyed her wonderful, loving and widespread family, and outdoor activities such as hiking, gardening, swimming, bicycling, bird watching, cross-country skiing and travel with her husband to points near and far. Gertrude and Dwight participated in 22 Elderhostel programs. Gertrude was a member of the Conway Village Congregational Church.

Gertrude is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Dwight A. Smith of Kearsarge, N.H.

She was predeceased by daughter Martha A. Hall; and her sisters, Virginia Smith, Barbara Thayer and Elsie Froeberg.
She is survived by daughter Laurel J. Smith of Boise, Idaho; sons, Dwight E. Smith of South Waterford, Eric R. Smith of South Portland and Ralph W. Smith of Milwaukie, Ore.; nine loving grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Ralph Evans of Durham, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service in Gertrude’s honor was held at the Conway Village Congregational Church (The Brown Church) on Main Street in Conway, N.H. on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010.
