SCARBOROUGH — Gertrude Mae Carver Pooler, 84, better known as “Gert,” of Scarborough, passed away on Friday, Aug. 8, 2015, at her home of 60 years after her courageous battle with cancer.

Gert was born on Jan. 28, 1931, the daughter of the late Perley W. Sr. and Mildred M. Carver. She grew up in Westbrook and was one of eight siblings. She started school at the Valentine Street School where she met her lifetime friend, Jean Gallant. Gert, at an early age, had a walking paper route with her brother and sister when the newspaper cost only 24 cents a week. She was always walking everywhere in Westbrook, to school and work.

At the age of 17 years, she met on a blind date her lifelong love of 62 years, Frank Pooler from Scarborough. They were married on Oct. 7, 1950. While raising their children, a family of four, Gert was a homemaker and gardener, canning everything to help provide for her family. When her children grew older, she began to work outside the home as a housekeeper for several residents of Prouts Neck for many years.

Gert was a lifelong member of the Scarborough Free Baptist Church, serving in American Baptist Women, Pioneer Girls, singing in the choir and held positions as financial secretary and treasurer for the Love Gift. Gert loved to participate in the church reading club.

Gert enjoyed knitting/crocheting, reading and ceramics with her two daughters. She enjoyed spending many weekends with her husband at their camp in Upton. She loved family time especially with her grand and great-grandchildren.

Gert was predeceased by her parents; her husband; daughter, Gail Key; three sisters, Ruth Hanson, Beverly Collomy and Cheryl Fuller; and two brothers, Perley Carver Jr. and William “Bubby” Carver.

She is survived by her children Glen W. of Scarborough, Gary W. of Gorham and Crystal Merry of North Waterboro; sisters, Marilyn O’Brien of East Baldwin and Shirley Rouse of Westbrook; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
