George R. Wilmot

SOUTH PORTLAND — George R. Wilmot, 88, of South Portland, died on Monday, March 14, 2011, at his residence with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Portland, the son of Frederick and Bernice Hawkins Wilmot. He was educated in Portland schools and graduated from Northeast Business College.

George served in the Army during WWII, serving in England, France, and the European Theater of Operation. In 1943 he married the love of his life, Rosina “Gig” A. Bennett in Liverpool, England and began his family.

Following the war, George worked as Food Service Director for 37 years at Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1987.
He enjoyed reading, walking, gardening and sports.

He was predeceased by his parents, and a grandson, Lonnie Arkalis in 1994. George is survived by his wife, Rosina “Gig” of South Portland; a daughter, Donna-Rae Arkalis of Burlington, Mass., a son, George R. J. Wilmot of Casco; a sister, Dorothy Fly of South Portland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Southern Maine for their compassionate care to George and support of his family.

A private graveside service for the family will be held with military rites at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
