SCARBOROUGH — Frank R. Fowles Jr., 95, of Portland, died on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Frank was born in Biddeford on July 22, 1917, the son of Frank and Marguerite “Haley” Fowles Sr. He was educated in Saco and Portland public schools. In 1929, the family moved to Detroit, Mich., where he attended the Detroit University School, Grosse Pointe, Michigan. In 1939, he graduated from Amherst College with honors.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served from 1940-1941 and again from 1942-1946.

Employed at Maine Bonding and Casualty Company from 1946-1982, Frank was president from 1964-1982 and a member of many insurance industry committees.

An active member of AA for over 30 years, Frank volunteered at Mercy Hospital’s Addiction Program, where he was highly regarded by staff and was influential in helping others achieve sobriety.

Frank served on the Seventy-Five State Street Board of Trustees and the Resident Life Committee, which develops programs that enhance the quality of resident life.

Frank was a contemplative man and well connected within the Seventy-Five State Street community. When he began exploring the issues of end of life care with others, he realized there was a common theme. There is a concern that one’s own end of life decisions may be open to interpretation. With the support and encouragement of residents and staff, Frank helped convene a panel of experts to facilitate a discussion for residents and families to explore these issues. As a result of this effort he was a recipient of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Frank enjoyed rich and meaningful relationships with a variety of people. He was loved and respected for his timeless wit and keen intellect, which included an impressive acuity for dates and detail. A consummate reader, he possessed a wealth of knowledge, great substance and insight, and was a source of wise counsel to his family and many friends.

Frank was predeceased by his wife Barbara; and stepson Robert Curran.

He is survived by children, Frank Fowles III of Raymond and Anne Simmons of Durant, Okla.; stepchildren, Catherine Curran of South Portland and Lisa Jones of Cape Elizabeth; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Seventy-Five State Street and Gosnell House for their kindness and care during Frank's recent illness.

A private interment will be in Cape Elizabeth. A tribute will be held in September with details to be announced later by the family. Arrangements are under the guidance of Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.
