NAPLES — Ferne W. Adams, 94, of Naples, died Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Bridgton Health Care Center after a short stay.

Ferne was born on Nov. 29, 1920, in New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of Frederick J. and Letitia (Scammell) Whitlock. She was the second of 10 children. Her family moved to Portland in 1923, and then moved to Edes Falls in 1925. She attended schools in the surrounding areas. Her father was deported back to Canada, but the family stayed here.

She married Charles H. Adams on Oct. 1, 1938, and they bought the JUST-A-MERE farm from the Chaplins in 1939. This is where she lived the rest of her life. They raised 11 of 12 children. Eight sons represented the five military services, with a total of 55 years.

She received her high school diploma from Lake Region High School in 1979, the same year her son William graduated.

Ferne was a life member of the Edes Falls Sewing Circle, a member of the Methodist Church and choir. Also, she was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary, Post #155. She worked at the old Naples Town Office and at the Chute Homestead on Rte. 35. She wrote a weekly column for The Bridgton News from the early 60s until late last year. She had a passion for reading, crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting. She had a steel trap for a mind, remembering birthdays and anniversaries, family or friends. She was a cutthroat player at Phase 10® , regular or tournament games.

She looked forward to the Adams Family Reunions in August, especially when the Canadian family came down. She had a love/hate relationship with the Red Sox.

Ferne did some traveling over the years with different family members, covering several states from Maine to Florida and into Canada.

Ferne was predeceased by her parents; her husband; six sons, Austin (infant), William, Michael, George, Richard and Harry; her brothers, Cecil (infant) and Lansley; her sisters, Vivian, Rita, Betty, Peggy; grandson Jason and granddaughter Britney Lee.

She is survived by her daughters, Sally and Nelson Wentworth, Elizabeth and Larry Chute, and Charlotte-Anne; her sons, John, Fred and Dusty, Steven and Anne; her sisters, Dorothy Stanizoni, Anita Whitlock; her brother Fred and Lorraine; cousin Lawrence Douglas; special cousins in England; many nieces and nephews; 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; and many, many friends!

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Edes Falls Cemetery, in Naples for all family and friends, followed by a reception, upstairs at the Legion Post #155 in Naples.
