Evelyn E. Hawkes, 95

PORTLAND — Evelyn Elizabeth Hawkes, 95, of Portland, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence with her loving family by her side.

She was born March 3, 1917 in Freeport, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Chaisson) DeRoche. Evelyn attended local schools.

Evelyn married Virgil Clifford Hawkes at St. Joseph’s Rectory on Jan. 22, 1939. They began raising their family. A devout Catholic, she was a daily communicant of St. Patrick’s Church. She was also a member of the Mothers’ Club there.

Her family was always the center of her life. She greatly enjoyed her time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After raising her children, she worked at the Eunice Frye Home. She loved visiting the residents as she performed her duties.

At St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence, she faithfully attended Mass and recitation of the rosary. She also enjoyed playing Bingo.

She was predeceased by her husband of 22 years on Jan. 13, 1961. She was later predeceased by her parents; five sisters, Yvonne Rivers, Rose Cook, Irene Smith, Corrine Smith, and Gertrude Huntley; a brother, Raymond DeRoche; a grandson and great-grandson.

Evelyn is survived by three daughters, Jean Morin of Cape Elizabeth, Pauline Hontz of Portland and Janice Farrin of Gray; four sons, Donald Hawkes of South Portland, Ronald Hawkes of Casco, John Hawkes and Bruce Hawkes, both of South Portland; a sister, Doris Stickney of Brunswick; a brother, Henry DeRoche of Florida and Massachusetts; 17 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were be held on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers were recited at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, at the chapel, followed by a 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1342 Congress Street, Portland.
